Great Race Participants?

"The Great Race", (Washington DC-Tacoma Washington) will be touring and stopping in my town, Grand Island, NE tomorrow night.  Does anyone in this group know of a participant from the W113 crowd?  In my neck of the woods we see more whooping cranes than W113's, so any opportunity I get to rub shoulders is a privilege.

"Great Race" sounds like it could be a real (fast) race? For those of us not in the know, could someone explain what kind of event this is?

Tim .... I doubt that there is a 113 that is old enough for the "Great Race".  Vechicles must be 45 years or older (I say vechicles because there have been trucks and fire engines entered in the past).  It is a time and distance rally which looks like one of the most fun car event around if you have the time.

You're are absolutely right...must be 45 or older.  I guess I should look before I shoot. :oops:   Sorry  about that.  I still plan to take it in and will look for any 'older' mercedes vehicles.  I'll take my camera and will post pictures if there is a mercedes in the group.

Well I did more digging and there are NO mercedes participants.  However, if you enjoy old cars you should really check out this web site.  This will give a picture of the driver, navigator and their car...really interesting.

Hello Cees,
Yes "The Great Race" is a fairly low speed "TSD" (average speed rally). I believe the maximum speed is 50mph and much lower in many places. I have a friend who has run it a few times in the past. He drives a 1955 Mercedes 190SL but I do not think he is running this year.
The winner takes home about $50,000.00 US as I recal! The Speed Channel on the cable showes the event from time to time.

Tim -- This morning as my wife and I were driving eastward on I-80, between Kearney and Grand Island, twe saw a number of "The Great Race" cars headed the other way.

I was out in Montana/Wyoming/Yellowstone last week on vacation and just missed them as they went into Idaho.  I wish I had known they would be there then and I would have made a special side trip to see them.
