Advice on Ignition Barrel ceasure
« on: July 14, 2005, 12:26:45 »
Hi, has anyone experienced problems with their Ignition Barrell? mine has ceased and I cannot obtain a replacement, I can get the barrell out of the car but then I'm at a loss - so your advice on how to get my little 230sl up and running again would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the search function? I seem to recall this was discussed not too long ago. Anyone have a quick fix?

Hello Anna,
These parts for your 230SL should be the same on the "finback" Mercedes sedans of the era. Find a good donor car with keys. For a 280SL find a good W108 Mercedes sedan donor.

If you cannot buy new, and you are really having problems finding good used parts let us know there are lots of donor cars over here.

My 230SL ignition just locked up. No way would it turn, the key wouldn't move. My locksmith couldn't even pick it. I had a barrel from a 250SL with a double cut key. I had read on this or the other forum that the later model with the double cut key would not fit the older model with the single cut key. I tried it anyways and it fit perfectly. The newer one protrudes from the dash a little further and had a mounting bracket clamped to it that bolted to a piece beside the radio in the dash. Rather than drilling holes I just left it off like the old one. So my conclusion is that any lock barrel from a 230, 250 or 280SL will interchange.

  Just checked with dealer. The one for a RHD 230SL no longer available.

However, the 250/early 280 ones for RHD are still available. :)
