Heat shields on all factory exhaust system 280SL ?
« on: December 11, 2023, 19:46:37 »
On an all factory exhaust system on a 1970 280SL, how many heat shields are involved with the exhaust system? and where exactly are they.

I've found evidence of three heat shields online, one for center, one for front, one for rear between gas tank and rear muffler, but, are all three factory standard?  (The below are pics I found online for heat shields.)

I don't have the rear one.  Wondering if I should have it installed.  This is the underside of my car:

I believe the rear one was only on earlier cars and dropped at some point. Someone else may know the exact date. The ones in your picture look like some homemade repros.

(The above are pics I found online for heat shields.)  They are not homemade though they are Made in Germany aftermarket but I assume the shape is correct for whatever was factory original.

I had a factory original heat shield installed (I don't have a picture of it) under at least the center muffler when I had the factory all original brand new exhaust system installed, but what I am wondering is if I should bother to have any more heat shields installed?

The reason I had to go through all this, is that the car was with one mechanic that was 500 miles away and they ended up charging me almost nothing but also doing nothing, other than losing my entire exhaust system (was stolen when their restoration shop closed because the owners died).  So then I started over with a good mechanic about 100 miles away, and had to replace the entire exhaust system (and lot else) with all factory parts that sometimes took a while to locate.

Since I had to start over with a whole new factory exhaust system, I don't know what should or was on there originally as far as heat shields.

I am enclosing picture from spare parts list on how the shields looked like.

Toeboard shield  A 113 490 00 30 installed as of chassis 042  001962

Shield A 113 492 03 30, still available as A 113 492 03 30 64.

I cannot find the shield between the tank and rear muffler anywhere on parts lists I have access to.

That's a good one, thank you!

It is on a good old drawing copied from paper book, this drawing does not exist in the EPC.

I have the part number 113 490 02 30, but the Mercedes system is under maintenance now, I could not check where it was applied. I will come back with it.

For now: the "Holy Grail" - no heat shield...

It looks I investigated it once already.... Here is what I found and wrote to you :) :

"New topic to me! I have this plate in 280SL (I think it makes a lot of sense). What I see in parts lists:
1. It is not present on any drawings
2. When you get to 113042 exhaust parts list you can find A 113 490 02 30 PROTECTIVE PLATE
LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT, which is this plate, I think.
3. It is present until chassis 042 015659 and then it is gone...

Looks like the truth what they say..."

And, to extend the life of the rubber exhaust hangers, don't forget to use these inexpensive little shields:
