Block number
« on: December 05, 2023, 22:50:56 »
Hello, I am looking at a 280 Sl with this picture sent to me as a "block number". Can anyone tell me what it means and if it is an original number on 280 Sl or some sort of replacement. I am not an engine person so need some help understanding what it means and if it looks as it should be on an original 280 Sl. Any help is appreciated.

I don't see your picture. Assuming you are talking about the stamped engine number, see below:

If you look at the pointer Dirk sent, you'll see that "130.983 is the engine for the 280 SL (W113)".
The next part, "12", means left-hand drive, automatic transmission.  The final part is the engine serial number.

If you become a Full Member (very worth the relatively small cost), you can find a lot more information about this and other parts of your car in our Technical Manual.
