Correct Injectors for 1967 Pagoda 250 SL

Hello Gents

I am looking at getting a new set of injectors for my car and am not sure which ones exactly.
I read about R1 and R2 as suitable.
What is the difference between the two?

ALso my mechanic says the older steel ones are much better than the new "Brass Looking" ones.

Any comments on this would be most helpful.

I may be wrong, but I believe one important difference is that you can't buy new R1 injectors anymore.  (Unless you find someone with new old stock in a cubby in their garage.)

The injectors part number for both 250SL and 280SL is the same - A 000 078 11 23, they use the same injectors. They are available.

I see some remarks that the earlier injectors were used on 250SL engines, but I do not see confirmation in the parts list, so I am not sure there.

So if you are after chasing unavailable injectors for a promise that they maybe keep the spray pattern longer - it is some choice. I think you will end up in buying a set of R2 injectors after a lengthy battle for finding a set of good old ones R1.

I think it is not worth it, given thousands of our cars driving happily along with R2s.

Thank you both for your prompt comments which are well noted.

One quick question, as things are with me now, 5 injectors are very good but only one is messing up a bit and tends to keep the spark plug quite black, but not failing yet.

Is it possible to add a new R2 for only that one cylinder?

FWIW; As part of my ongoing restoration of my late production 250SL, I sent my
FIP and 2 sets of injectors out to Jerry Fairchild in CA for overhaul. One set of injectors was from the late engine and the other set came out of an early motor ( low serial number M129) that I had acquired. After the work was completed I asked if either set of injectors was better and they said the early set had the better spray pattern.

Thank you Mike, Yes so it seems as more than one person has commented about the spray pattern.
My mechanic insists that the newer "brass looking" type tend to spoil quicker than the old steel ones, I guess he is referring to R2 vs R1.
However, most of the R2s we have been able to get in my country, although Bosch, but not made in Germany - i think made in Turkey, and as our friend Pawel mentioned that all is going well with the many cars using them, I will go on with that.

I am just still wondering, until I can locate the same injector as mine to replace the 6th slightly faulty injector, will it be ok to replace only one with an R2, or should I replace them all, or leave things as they are?

I would think any difference between the R1 and R2 injector is small enough that they could be used together. Might want to change out the faulty one with an R2 until you decide which way you want to go.
