How do I dismantle this?
« on: December 19, 2023, 20:52:33 »
Hi everyone
Yet again seeking out the great knowledge held in the forum 😀

So, I’m dismantling chrome items to have rechromed.

The item in question is the sun visor mount. One was very easy as only a screw holding it in place. However the other one has what looks like a chrome cap on top? Have tried prizing it off and even tapping the bar from the other side to loosen, but to no avail

Does anyone have any idea/cunning plan as to how to separate the bracket from the arm?

Any ideas greatfully received 🥹

Can you push the rod further into the bracket to raise the chrome cap enough to see if there is a circlip holding it in?

The other thought would be some sort or spring loaded ball bearing that holds the rod into a groove on the inside of the bracket.  If this is the case, some light oil worked in and a swift tap on the chrome cap end with a brass punch may move the ball out of the groove.

Both total guesses - good luck!

Hello Katie, can you take a picture of the other side of the bracket, the side that fixes to the car, to see what's actually inside there, may give a clue.  What was on the other visor, you say the cap was missing, how was that fixed, perhaps a picture of that would help as well
I've seen some new repro's where the whole cap had a screw slot on it, so the whole thing screwed off

i would just prepare it  (polish)  and send it as an assembly to the chromers.

done this . It's a push fit and being aluminium easy to damage . Needs prising out to access the screw

Thank you all!
Gave up and sent for chroming intact!

Would anyone know if these can still be bought?

Many thanks again

Katie, I think so. If it is an early style sunshade hinge, check out SLS-HH store. Perhaps they also have it in the SL shop.

Thank you

Did have a quick look but they only appear to sell the whole item, not just the little cap.
Will email them and see if they have anything. If that’s no good, there’s an engineering place near me who perhaps could make some stainless ones 😁
