123 distributor install on an M130 questions...
« on: April 03, 2024, 23:05:52 »
I'm hoping someone has run into this before I'm stumped!

I have a 1969 M130 that was running well, I removed the Bosch distributor its the 051 and installed the 123 ignition distributor. I have the timing at idle set to 8 degrees BTDC.

It fires right up and actually idles better than ever, I can rev it up out of gear no problem. When I shift to reverse it hiccups for a second but it will go into reverse and idle. When I shift it to drive it stalls.

What am I missing here I've gone through the process three times with the green light on the 123 ignition...I'm at a loss I'd appreciate any advice!

You may need to review the curves and make sure they are setup properly.   There are some good discussions and recommended 123 curves to look at on this site.

I waited to change the distributor until I had the engine running well. So the only variable here should be the distributor. I’ve done the linkage tour, checked and adjusted the idle. I’ve cleaned and got the cold start valve working and a bunch of other things. The engine actually runs really well now.

123 ignition confused me when I read the installation instructions. According to them my distributor the 051 should be on an SL. I emailed the classic center and they confirmed that my distributor is correct for my car. So I set the little dial to the 051 distributor. I wonder if I should ignore that and try the other setting they say should work for the none emissions 280SE.

So I made progress! The forward pressure switch on the transmission isn’t grounding and activating the css.

I grounded both switches with the key on and the css moved with both. So my wiring, fuse, and relay are working correctly.

Next I put a meter on both switches and when I shifted to reverse it goes to ground. Forward no ground.

Just an update to close out this thread. I changed the transmission hydraulic pressure sensor and it works great! Goes into drive and idles great.

Thanks for the advice it was correct!
