convertible problem

Can't get the back window section out of storage compartment.  While raising the soft top the rear section stayed in the compartment and now I can't get it out or the forward section back in?

The back frame catches on the curved hinges for the compartment cover and it's just stuck!  It's amazing to me, but I can't see a way out! I have tried "muscle", but I'm afraid things are going to break!  What do I do?    :?:

Here's what I would do. If possible, fold the entire top (front section) back down as though you were putting it away. At this point, make sure it is fully-smushed.  This should allow the mechanism to re-hook itself.

Then try normal pull-up technique -- I make sure the back comes up still folded, as the front starts to extend. Then, I put down the case and pull apart the back fold... On mine, it is then the back latch first, then the front ones. Good luck.

Thanks James.  In addition to your suggestion, I had to loosen two bolts in the bottom frame of the back section.  This allowed me to put some slack in the frame and get the folded top back in the compartment.  I then lifted from the back section first to pull the top out.

Now I have to figure out how it got in that position in the first place!

You have discovered a quirk with the folding top, I know another owner who got in the same "jam" and had to bring the car to a mechanic to do just what you did (loosen the bolts).  Just be glad you didn't ry to muscle it, no amount of levering would have helped, it just makes it worse.  It's just a quirk, now that you know to lift both sections at the same time it will never happen again.  Congrats.

Glad you got it KGB.

You know what is amazing about this group? I was just out swimming with family and guests, and said to myself -- well, got to go check and see if KGB got his problem solved... Think about it, we are basically one big Pagoda family, eager to share in the great fun of owning these cars...

Ok, now back to my OTHER family... 8)

One of the ongoing issues with these tops is that they lose their tension in the rear section of the frame over time. Eventually, the rear window part just flops down and doesn't stay up on its own. Most owners just live with that and make sure not to lower the rear section until the entire frame is completely lifted out of the well.

This is an amazing group; when the problem developed, after scratching my head and tugging much too hard I thought someone must have had the same problem.  All the comments are keepers.  Thanks to everyone!  :D
