day trip meter
« on: July 26, 2005, 08:55:09 »
I bought a second hand odometer km/h and noticed that the daytrip return button does not work. Is there a way of reparing it or do I just have to live with it? Anyone did the job allready? Enclosed a picture of the inside mechanism, as I see it only the small shaft turns and the cogwheel stays in place.

I assume you realise that the knob needs to be twisted not pressed !  Sorry if this is stating the obvious !

I am going out on a limb here, because my experience is with a /6 BMW motorcycle (early '60's era) speedo that looks very similar to yours.  The shaft is mounted through the front arbor, through the bushing and then press-fit into the plastic gear. The gear has lost it's hold on the shaft - maybe just normal wear but more likely from heavy friction in the rest of the gear train for the tripmeter.  The latter should resolve when you clean and oil the mechanism (I use a very light grade clock or gun oil).  You can then try to super glue the shaft back into the gear (you will figure out when and where to put the glue so that you don't end up glueing the bushing also) or if you are handy with very small tools you can drill and pin the gear to the shaft.  Note that the latter is a one-time only repair, you will probably never get the gear off again without destroying it.

Hope this helps, good luck,

greg

Take a close look at the plastic or nylon gear wheel and you will see a hairline crack where the wheel has split along the splined shaft.  If you want to be good, you can disassembly it to the extent where you take the nylon wheel and shaft out and put a brass wheel and shaft it belongs to in.
I've done this twice and both of were easy to do and kept the mileage.

On another note-when did they change the housing cover on the back of the speedo from a metal one to a ivory rubber one?

Indeed after a closer look I see the wheel has a small crack and obviously cannot hold to the shaft anymore.Walter you spoke about changing it to brass, seems a good idea but where can one find those not so common small wheels? Also for the record I took off the ivory-rubber housing to get a closer look at the mechanism. I think the cover you mean is to keep out dust and dirt from the interior parts isn't it? Thanks for the answer Walter, you too Greg.

Paul,
There is an old thread here with a link to a site where the repair is discussed and the guy sells repair kits with a brass gear.

Are you sure it's here?  It could be on the old Yahoo! Group or at the other Pagoda 113 site.
