Lubricating Door Hinge

Hello everyone.

1966 230SL.  I have had the Oregon grease gun "Push n Lube" for probably a few years now, and just decided to use it.  I don't believe that it is working, though.  I hold it firmly against the "cup" in the hinge and pump the gun by pushing it into the cup repeatedly but it just doesn't look like anything is happening.  There's no evidence of grease in the cup nor on the tip of the gun.  I then took a socket small enough to force the cone of the tip against and tried to pump it there but nothing came out but I'm not sure that it would, i.e. it may be that the ball in the tip needs to be depressed to release the grease?

The grease in the gun looks perfectly fine.  So I'm wondering if I might be missing something?  What is your experience in greasing these hinges?

I have used the same brand grease gun many times. I have noticed that they can be difficult to prime the first time they are used. After that they work first shot every time. Even though these are made of plastic, they are good quality and closely configured like the original MB versions. They are made in Germany and are filled with modern high quality synthetic grease. The best thing is they are available at your local Home Depot store, located in with the chain saw parts. Price is and less than $10 and is already filled with more grease than you will ever use.  My advice is be persistent, pump it vigorously and after it primes-up your good.

Thanks for the response.  How are they primed, by simply continuing to pump them?

Well - never mind!  My gun had a soft plastic/rubber cap inside the gun (and separate from the black plastic cap that fits over the gun body).  I removed that and pumped it repeatedly, and it worked!
