Alignment tool rear axle
« on: January 05, 2025, 18:43:22 »
Hello,

I mounted the rear axle after a revision and I am very happy with it.
I rolled the car a few meters.

I aligned the axle after making the proposed tool, however here is my question:

The tube of the middle pointer has to be 203 mm according to the drawing. That makes the tool tilt down at the rear.

My car is on the floor, the diff looks horizontal, camber looks OK, slightly positive.
The center of the pivot bolt is 280 mm above the floor.
The tube that goes over the step bearing center bolt is 270 mm above the floor. That is a difference of only 10 mm.

However the drawing of the tool shows a difference of 203 mm -/- 127 mm = 76 mm.

I found one thread with the same problem, but I could not find the explanation.

I included a picture of the tool found in this forum (not mine!) showing that the heights of the vertical  tubes is almost the same, just as I observe.

Can anyone help me with an explanation?
Would be fantastic!

Thanks a lot!

Thanks al lot, Dirk!
I found these pictures in the forum.

Is the vertical pipe in the middle approx. 76 mm longer than the other two pipes?

The vertical element is academic. The purpose of the tool is to get the axle aligned centrally for correct thrust axis; it has nothing to do with axle height or camber.
An easy gross error check is to look at the gap between the tyres and the chassis. They should be the same left and right.

Thanks for your reply, Stick!

The axle is well aligned now and the chassis is horizontal.
So nothing to worry about!

Thanks again & have a good day!
