Well, First let me say that thanks to the forum, and a little of my own research, I went into this deal with enough info to not make an emotional decision!
Once underneath that car, I pretty much knew what everyone's response would be...
I was in touch with the seller today and made an offer which i know he wasn't happy with as my deposit $ is on its way back to me. He did however recognize the concerns and you never know, maybe i have found one to restore. At the right starting price, I'll take on a project!
So For Now...The search moves on!
Thanks for the info on sources...I have spoken to Alex and he was a great help. He even offered to look at my pics and info I had so he could do an informal evaluation for me. Super guy. I may wind up looking to him for my SL. I have used a broker for a car in the past and was extremely pleased. The fee was easily offset by the time saved not out looking for the car myself.
Through this whole experience, i think that i have concluded that i may end up better off if i expand my search to include some higher-dollar cars without the big issues.
One interesting note...In talking to a local Boston MB shop owner, he said that there a couple of folks in the Boston area who are buying as many of these SL's just like this one but in worse condition for way too much money, then shipping to Europe for Restoration. The euro is way too strong and the import taxes are nothing when the car's condition is poor.
Well, you know what i am looking for, so if you see anything out there, let me know.
