Off topic: inventor of the electric starter
« on: August 29, 2006, 06:11:29 »
Today is the birthday of Charles E. Kettering, the American inventor of the starter (1876-1958).  His greatest quote is often heard in IP circles:

"Inventing is a combination of brains and materials.  The more brains you use, the less materials you need."

Happy Birthday, Chuck.

It should be noted for trivia experts that Mr. Kettering was a founder of the Dayton Electric Company, which later became, by acronym, Delco.

The starter was only one of his many accomplishments, including:

Electric cash register
Electric auto ignition
Spark plug
Freon for refrigerators and air conditioners.
Leaded gasoline
Quick drying paint for automobiles
Safety glass
Portable electric generator
Four-wheel brakes
Automatic transmission
Electric railway gate
First synthetic aviation fuel

A good book:

Perhaps his greatest legacy is the Kettering part of Sloan Kettering Cancer center in New York.
