67 250SL Owners Manual
« on: September 03, 2005, 07:15:23 »
It is difficult to get a copy of the 67 250SL Owners Manual.
The reprints of the Late 250SL / Early 280SL are available at the Mercedes classic center.

Would this 250/280 manual contain the same information for the early 250's.

Is there any difference between a 67 250Sl and a 68 250SL.

Be patient these manuals do show up on ebay, which is where I found mine.

I will make a distinction on the 68 250SL question you asked, by saying that the real difference came in the middle of the model year, with serial 2980. This is when the safety equipment for the US came into place for the 250, different interior parts and pieces, door handles, door pockets, various safety related changes, (you can read thorugh Meredith's book, and see a bit more detailed list)steering wheel, heater levers etc.

So if you have an early car, yes the manual will be different. I have not made a side by side comparison to know if the mechanical items would be substantively different, things like maintenance routines, grease points, tuning, capacities. etc.

I think I may have one from my former '67 ZF5.  If I come across it I'll let you know.

My '68 280SL apparently came with a 250SL manual.  My car was built in November 1967 (Serial #000176).  All of the information in the book seems to follow except the designation.  I have often wondered when the 280 books were first printed.

The books that state 250sl/280sl cover both models. For the most part when there is a difference between the two, they will split the page and give seperate info.

Thank you for the reply.

I have the 250/280 manual.  I believe this identifies the 68 250SL

The question is 'what are the difference between the 67 and 68 250SL's

Aashish,

I am certainly not as much an expert as others here but I BELIEVE that question is difficult to answer because these cars were "hand-built" as opposed to being done on an assembly line. This allowed for changes to be made more frequently than just when the model or the year changed. I would bet these changes weren't great enought to make a difference in the owner's manual, though. According to the mostly-accurate (so I hear) book "Original Mercedes SL, The Restorer's Guide" by Laurence Merideth, The first 250 SL produced was on 12/2/66, assumingly as a 1967 model year car (my 230 SL was produced in October 1966 as a 1967 also so only two months prior to the last 230). The big change in the 250 SL came on 7/12/67 (chassis ending in 2890) when a number of "safety" modifications were made, so alot depsnds on your chassis number/date of production. I can email you a copy of the page if you'd like. The last 250SL was produced in November 1967 as a 1968 model year car. I believe that Mercedes changed model year designations in the fall back then.
