water in the air duct
« on: October 15, 2005, 22:48:15 »
I found a little water inside the rubber air duct between the air filter box and the throttle housing. I am not 100% sure if it is coolant or just water.   There is a water channel (I think) goes around the housing.  Unless there is a crack inside I can't see how water gets inside the air duct.  There are two pipes on the top of the throttle housing.  The air pipe is connect to the top of the valve cover.  I see water under the air pipe sometime.  The water pipe side alwasy dry.  Make no sense to me.  Unless there is so much moisture getting sucked out of valve cover.  Any idea?

Condensation? Do you live in a humid environment? How frequently does this happen and how frequently do you drive the car?
In the 280s, there is a water jacket that encircles the intake which, I guess, is intended to prevent intake icing.  Early versions were copper pipe around the outside of an aluminum sleeve.  It would be darn near impossible for that arrangement to leak into the intake.  Later models were cast into the aluminum.  Still, an unlikely leak.  In either case, it wouldn't seem logical that the water would migrate against the air flow into the duct.
If the water contains anti-freeze, it should have a mild odor sort of like maple syrup.  That may be hard to detect over the smell of rubber from the duct.
