Automatic Transmission Fluid ?
« on: October 16, 2005, 05:48:26 »
:) I have seen posted that we should use Dexron B for our automatic transmissions.

 I cant seem to locate, although have not gone to the dealer...

What I did find was Castrol Dexron-III Mercon (Approved for H Specification).

:?: Will this work in place of Dexron B?

What are the pros, cons of not using B?

Thank you!

Finished the transmission service today.  Used Castrol Dexron-III.

What do others use in their automatic transmission?

One bit of advice before you start on your auto trans service...  buy new washers for the banjo fitting on the dip stick tube where it connects to the trans housing.  I reused my old ones and had transmission fluid (~3 quarts) all over the garage floor.  What a mess.  Anyway, these are aluminum washers that form-to-fit when you tighten the bolt down.

Transmission shifts very smooth now and I am happy this one is finished!

If any of you have changed your trans fluid filter before, please read my other post regarding the filter...  Why was my old filter so different than the new Mann filter from Millers?  New one looks like the one in the Haynes manual...

Thanks All!

Dexron III appears to be the standard. I have heard of some owners using Redline Automatic Transmission Fluid in their vintage Mercedes with claims of better shifting.  I am thinking about trying the Redline, which I think is a synthetic.  Maybe it maintains viscosity better.  Anyone using a synthetic in their auto tranny?
