Don't want to be a sucker

I am new to all this and would appreciate some advice. I am seeking a 1969-1971 280sl, though I would consider a 250 if you write to suggest that it is a signficantly more exciting driver. Anyway. I have not been in a position to own a second car until now and hope to enjoy doing so for a long time. This would mean for me, not living in the shop (me or the car) and having a beauty to look at in the driveway that I can drive 100 miles a month or so. How do I go about finding a good car that doesn't need to be a show car but is good restoration without a lot of work needed? I see them on ebay and the idea of buying one long distance with no support doesn't appeal. How to find an honest former owner or dealer?. How to gauge from an ebay picture if I am seeing what is really there?  All feedback welcome. :?:

I think you're in the right place. I would continue to educate yourself by reading past posts about problem areas and expensive fixes for these cars. This site is the place to do that sort of research.

There are a lot of these cars for sale on ebay, find a couple close to you nad go look at them and drive them but leave your checkbook at home.  In fact look at as many as you can before considering a purchase.  Occassionally someone on this site will post that they are selling their car, so be on the look out.


YOu may also want to become a member fo MBCA as the Star magazine often has classified from private owners/enthusiasts.
