113 in the Movies--"Two for the Road"
« on: August 27, 2005, 06:45:31 »
...hitting the channel changer last night through PBS, and lo and behold, as I landed on PBS, there was a young Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn getting into a RHD 230SL, White 050, with hard top.

The movie is called "Two for the Road" and you can read more about it here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062407/

In a nutshell, the movie is about the couple and how their marriage changes over the years; they are constantly flashing back and forth to different times, all as they are travelling Europe, and the cars they have is one device the director uses for you to figure out what part of the 10-year time in their marriage you are seeing...

In the beginning when they are happy, they are in an MG-TF that eventually catches fire.  When Albert Finney strays in the middle of their relationship, he is in a Triumph Herald Cabriolet, at the crux of their relationship, they are in the Pagoda.  Curiously (must be a British thing) the Herald has a large sticker on the back that says "Running In--Please Pass".

Didn't see the entire film (was getting those looks from my wife and daughter...) but it does appear to be a worthwhile film.  A young Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney, dashingly young William Daniels (in a Country Squire travelling Europe??)and all those bygone scenes of Europe make it worthwhile.

I was told by a film buff that that was Hepburn's personal 230 SL.

Yes, it was, and she kept it for several years.  The BRG M.G. that caught fire was a TD.  They could do that rather easily as the S.U carbs are mounted directly above the exhaust manifold without benefit of any kind of a heat shield!  There are only two kinds of S.U. carbs fitted to any British car from that period:  the kind that are leaking, and the kind that are going to leak - they all have cork jet seals!

Not to ruin the ending for you, but the last two lines of the movie, two separate bits of dialog, are "B1tch!" and "Bastard!".
