Noise - Right Rear

Hello All!

Recently I have had a noise develop in my rear right wheel area.  The noise sounds like a scraping sound, almost like the wheel hub scraping against the brake dust cover plate…

You can hear the sound when you let off the gas (going about 25-30mpg to avoid other road noise…) and coast.  When I step, even just a little, on the gas, then the sound seems to go away.  So, giving it torque seems to deaden the noise.

I have a new brake hub, and new pads (actually did all 4 wheels with new hubs and pads earlier this year).  I did pull the pads out and sanded and cleaned them and put some new brake squeal paste on them…  Didn’t really do anything to stop the sound…

When I had the rear jacked up (under the frame) while cleaning the pads, I rotated the wheel by hand to see if I could hear the noise, but I couldn’t.  

What could be causing this noise?  One thing that puzzles me is the scraping sound…  again almost like the hub scraping against the dust cover, but only when let off the gas....

Bob .... It is hard to guess from what you have described.  Try driving in a circle, both left and right.  See if you can reproduce the noise while turning, that should give you some more information.  My initial thought was to inspect the flex-disk and the drive shaft for evidence of rubbing.

Hello Bob,
It is a little difficult to diagnose without actually hearing it. However, it could be something in the emergency brake assembly, possibly spring or such. If it is just something hanging up it may go away on its own. If it is a broken spring it will need to be fixed. Try slightly pulling the emergency brake handle next time the noise occures.

Test for a wheel bearing by driving down the road and swerve the car from side to side. Bearing  noise will come and go as the weight of the car shifts from side to side.

I just changed a rear bearing on Bob Fellows W113 and will do a "Wheel Bearing Tour " soon.

I have had a squeeling sound developing at the rear over the past few months. I am guessing it is a bearing but also considered the emergency braking system (tried gently appyling the e-brake while driving and the noise did not go away). So I for one am looking forward to the "Wheel bearing tour"!

Hi All,

Last night I was able to determine that the noise that I was hearing is from my parking brake shoe on the right rear side... not the bearing, so great news!

One shoe was completely down to metal and scored the inside of the hub a bit.

 :?:  :oops: Question:  While I am awaiting my new shoes, would you recommend that I simply remove the old shoes and drive without a park brake on that side?  Or should I just screw in the adjuster nut to ensure no more contact with the wheel hub?  Just don’t want to screw anything up and still drive the car...
