Tail Light Lens Question
« on: November 11, 2005, 08:15:36 »
I have a stupid question - I have a 1970 280sl, originally from Vermont, and the car has yellow turn signal lenses on the tailights.  Are my tailight lenses supposed to be yellow or red signal lenses for a 1970 280sl ?

My lenses are a bit dark, and the chrome surrounds are terrible.  Does anybody know where I can get the chrome surrounds for the rear tailight.  I saw a new pair on the internet, with chrome surrounds, but zanone outbid me, again.

From what I can see, the easiest way to get new chrome surrounds is to hold out for a brand new set of rear tailights.

Can anyone enlighten me ?

TD,

Bud's Benz now sells separate chrome, lens and housing units.  As you probably know by now, your unit is a one-piece, and I don't know anyone who has been successful in salvaging the lens as it is so difficult to separate from the chrome without damage.  And I believe you have the correct color (amber), just be thankful you don't need the scarcer all red unit that is correct for the older 113's.

Check with Dave at Bud's, he is very knowledgable (but not cheap)!

Frames should be seperate on yellow/red tail lamps.
It is the earlier red/red that the lens is part of reflector/frame ..

SLS has them..
Try

Terence,

You should re-chrome the frame and clean the lens, inside and out. Good winter restoration project.

AD, thanks for the correction, and can you comment on the possibility of separating the lens from the chrome on the older units?  I have some pitting on one bezel and I would love to be able to send it out for rechroming, if possible.
