1969 280SL

I am in the market for a Pagode, ideally 1967 (it is a birthday present for my wife, would like her year of birth) but have problems finding the right one and I am not married to the year.

Test drove today a light blue (seems to be the original color) with white leather interior, condition very original, apparently repainted in the mid-80s, current owner had it for 10 years, runs very good, started immediately, he claims he drives it once a week and services it regularly.

Miles are 77000, wooden dash is not cracked, no rust visible (car has been in Nevada for at least 20 years and has been garaged). It shows age on the door seals, two or three small cracks in the paint, trunklid has discolored more than the fenders (aluminium).I would rate condition as a 3+

Now here is my question: asking price is $22,000 - what are your thoughts on the price - tried to research this online but the prices are all over the place? What would you in particular look for to ensure that no trouble lurks around the corner.
If I decide to buy in and want to freshen the car up a bit - how much is a typical price for light sanding & repair plus paintjob (if I change the color, does this typically effect the resale value?); what is the price for new upholstery - anyone got any history?

The prices are all over the place because a great, perfect, flawless condition car (restored or original) is worth a LOT of money, maybe $60,000 or much more.  So, a piece of junk is worth $3,000.  Your car could be anywhere in between and it's up to YOU to determine it's worth, unless you're going to get an SL specialist to examine it for you.

I fully believe that value can only be determined in person by an expert on that particular type of vehicle.

You asked about color sanding. I'd talk to a local body guy about that. There are so many variables here, including whether it's even feasible on that particular vehicle's paint. Perhaps the seller will allow you to take the car to a suitable shop before sealing the deal. (This will also give you the chance to put it up on a lift.)

Perhaps people can point you in the right direction if you would share your locale.
