Engine M130983 Water-Pipe...?

I have a question there:

The engine was a M130983 built-in in my 'Pagoda 280SL / 1970.

On the Photo No. 1 on ride site at the end of the Cylinder-Head, you
see a yellow-chromatic 15 mm thick water-pipe, add-on at the Ende-Top
of Cylinder-Head, runs down to the other Engine-Side and runs along
the Motorblock to the front (Photo No. 2). At the pipe is add-on a
Giver for the cold start facilities.

German engines normaly do not have this pipe. What else does this
pipe have for a function? Is this a second water-cycle?

I am only guessing since I have never seen one as well but it looks like an attempt to fix an overheating problem by increasing coolant return flow from the back of the head.

On my car the cold start switch(thermo time switch) is screwed into the hole where the tube is attached on the back of the head.

Hello Naj,

Many many thanks for your E-Mmail, and the great scans.

One thing I have not yet understood. The pipe was an additional
circuit to reduce the temperature. I have heard this kit was used in
cars (W111, W108, W113) with Air-Conditioning in your Sunny-States,
where the engines were often times hot. Is that so?

Hello, Detlef,

The kit was used with the late 280 SLs with overheating problems but I don't know if it was for North America only or not.  :?

I saw this on Michel's car (from Montreal, Canada) at Blacklick and he gave me the details.

Way off thread here but I find the oil canister angle surprising in Detlef's second photo. When and why did that change?

James the angled oil filter housing is found on the M130 engines it could have something to do with the remote oil cooler lines that attached to the filter housing.

Hello Detlef,

Yes this was a factory supplemetary by-pass to improve cooling.

Mercedes issued an "Advanced Service/Product Information" work instruction in October of 1970.  The parts came in a kit #130-586-01-20 (new number #130-586-02-20). The main parts in the kit are the by-pass pipe and a "y" pipe.

The kit was meant to improve cooling in the rear of the cylinder head. It was probably only used for very warm climates or on engines which ran warmer than normal.

My engine was completely overhauled at the End of 2006. During
installation, I have the experience: The pipe can be without the
motor should be raised at least, not to include more later. How were
you in the pipe below the engine through built? Have you raised the
engine?

I thought it looked like a bypass, but didn't want to comment since I'm not that familiar with this engine's design. It allows water to flow through the engine while the thermostat is closed, but at a lower flow rate than stat open. It is common practice in newer engines, it prevents localized boiling in the cylinder head when the engine gets loaded right after startup.
