In response to Tom: On Christmas eve we made Fondue, a Swiss cheese dish, with some wine. On Christmas day we visited my daughter. She cares for dogs and for the holidays she had nine of them. She lives in a trailer. She served a prime rib dinner and we all sat around a table with some dogs laying around and some outside. It was raining, but warm. I got her Toyota to start and drove it for maybe six miles, explaining to her, that a vehicle should be operated once in a while.She had been unable to start it for many weeks. I didn't do anything special.

I also want to extend my wishes for a Merry Christmas.  Curious how everyone around the world is spending or spent their Christmas.  For us, it was opening presents in the morning, playing with the new toys and gadgets, preparing portions of a meal and heading over to friends for a late afternoon/evening meal.  How about our friends in England, Germany, Holland, Australia, Russia, Hong Kong, etc.?

Happy Xmas to you all from Brisbane, Australia

Xmas day was HOT (35C) and humid and the afternoon storm rumbled around for 2-3 hours. We definitely appreciate the rain fall.
I shared Xmas lunch with my family and mother in her nursing home.
Today we (Aussies) watched the traditional Boxing Day Cricket match.

The hot weather has not stopped me from driving 'Snowy'.

I Hope you all have a safe and prosperous New Year.

The comraderie of this group is refreshing and a pleasure to be part of.

Dear all,

A (belated) Merry Christmas and a Happy 2006.

On Chistmas eve I cooked a traditional turkey for the family according to a classic British recipe. On Christmas day we had the whole family here (all 13) for a meal with venison using a New-Zealand recipe. On Boxing day we had fondue (but not with cheese). Today we even got a light dusting of snow.

However, on less positive news. When I tried to start the old pagoda last week and tried to drive it out of the garage I could move the gear lever out of Park into Drive, but nothing engaged on the gearbox. Upon researching the forum I learned this is a common problem (linkage / bushings between lever and box). I'm sure my repair man can fix it... if I can get the car out of garage. This is not so easy... it's stuck in park. It's very close to the wall with no room for manouver. The garage is at the end of a drive with pebbles (not an ideal surface to ride a dolly or jack with small wheels across). Ah well, I'm sure he'll figure something out in the new year.

May your 2006 be happier. Perhaps I ought to stick with cooking instead of pagoda's...

Try moving the gear lever into another forward gear. That sometimes works.

Hey Vanesp,
Here is another option. Pull back the carpet on the trans hump, remove the 4 bolts (see pic.) that hold the shifter lever, this should come right out now the linkage is disconnected, then move the trans shift lever (see pic.) by hand to neutral position.

What if it is the lower trans selector lever bush that is broken/loose?

When it happened to me I was able to crawl under that side of the car and put the lever back on the trans selector lever. This gave me enough movement to get the car going in the correct gear.

Peter make sure you get the correct bush.

Correct part number is A112 268 01 50

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'll try and figure out if it is the bottom or top linkage (or both) that are failing, and, in dicussion with my mechanic, will take either of the suggested actions.

It is a little too cold now to be playing with this... my hands would freeze off in my garage!

You might see my fixes for both linkages on the forum in the past two years.  The lower one can easily be reached, as Bob says.  The upper requires pulling the shifter, as Tom suggests.  While you're at it, might as well check both because if one fails, the other is probably just as brittle.

Once replaced, the Teflon bushings can be reinforced with locking wire to make sure it's a lifetime fix!  Good luck, and Happy New Year to all from sunny Sarasota.
