Cost of Professional Cadmium Plating
« on: January 31, 2006, 11:32:20 »
Eventually I may want to remove all the parts under the hood (not on the chassis where they can't be seen) and have them professionally restored and cadmium plated.  A lot of you are familar with the parts involved under the hood of a Pagoda that were originally finished with this.

I just want a "guesstimate"...if I removed all the parts myself...what expense am I looking at???  $2,000...$3,000...$5,000..more?

Does anyone know of a good place within driving distance from Atlanta, GA?

Thanks!

Chad...I have no idea what it would cost to restore some of these items.  I know that I spent several thousands on rechroming my 1956 Lincoln.  I really don't know what is involved with yellow plating.  I did hear back from one member privately and found out that this process is dirt cheap compared to triple plate show chrome!  I would like to try and restore under the hood myself.  I want to get an idea what tasks will cost.  On that note...I would love to know what I can expect to spend to have a respectable restoration shop do an under the hood "cosmetic" restoration?

I always thought that it would be $300-$500 to have the cad parts replated, there are a couple places in Ca. that do it well. But it shouldn't be hard to find someone relatively local who can do the work and do it in an environmentally friendly and safe way. Haven't got that far yet, not until later '06. In any case, painting, powder coating etc. will cost the larger $$$ in that project. Are you pulling the engine for this or mechanical refurbishing?  I will probably have to delay any engine bay work myself as my shop has backed away from it a bit in recent months.

Chad,

I don't know how far I'll go with an under the hood restoration.  For now I am planning on just cleaning up well and deal with the obvious eye sores.  I don't plan on showing the car but over time I am sure I will want to it be more asthetically pleasing for me!  Like you the cadmium plating will be down the road a bit.  I am pleased that it is only around $500.  :D   Restoring a Pagoda seems like it will be a lot more reasonable than what I went through with my 1962 Lincoln Continental Convertible or 1956 for that matter.  Plus, it is so nice to be able to walk into RBM Atlanta and order parts!  I just need be patient and not expect everthing to happen overnight!  8)
