« on: January 25, 2006, 19:19:37 »

I NEED HELP. MY TRANSMISSION IS SHOT AND I NEED TO KNOW WHERE TO FIND A QUALITY REBUILT MANUAL (TOP COVER) TRANSMISSION FOR MY 1970 280SL. I LIVE IN THE METRO NEW YORK CITY AREA, USA. IF NOT THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION, WHERE CAN I FIND THE PARTS, SO I CAN HAVE IT REBUILT. THANKS.

I looked high and low for a transmission rebuilder a couple of years ago to rebuild my 4 speed manual when it began to make bearing noises.  My regular mechanic was afraid to tackle it.  Through a friend I met a guy that did a fair amount of manual transmission rebuilds and he agreed to do it.  He found it to be a simple task and, in my case, all it needed were bearings.  I replaced the synchros too while it was apart.  It has worked fine ever sicne.  My parts were easily found and not too unreasonably priced but it is my understanding that if I had needed a shaft or gears it would have been difficult to locate and very expensive.  Those transmission parts are supposedly among the rarer and most expensive parts for our cars and I am guessing the 5 speed is even worse.

Missy,

Here's our database of parts & service suppliers:

http://www.sl113.org/data/show_table.asp?table_name=usr_parts_and_service_suppliers

Contact ones near you, even if they're not dealing with transmissions, and ask them for local references.  Perhaps contact your local MB dealers and ask them for local references.

Missy, Might have a manual tranny for you.  Have look in the back of the garage-when it warms up!
