Fuel injection pump 230 SL
« on: March 25, 2006, 01:43:09 »
My car sat for 4 months...
on starting mixture was very very rich.. black smoke then within 3 minutes the plugs blackened with carbon and engine stalled and would not start..cleaned plugs... same senario...
Assuming pump is stuck or contaminated. can it be cleaned? or must it be overhauled!!
would the workshops specialized in deisel fuel injection pumps be able to clean it. if they dont play around with the adjustments?

I nead help!!

Hello arifaat,

The first thing to look at is the "warm up device"  on the injection pump it is probably stuck. There are a lot of posts on this subject try to search some up.  It is usually easy to diagnose and fairly easy to fix.

Here is what you are looking for. Check back for more information as needed.

Diagnose the problem by removing the small round air filter on the injection pump. A skinny 22mm or 19mm wrench is needed. Air should be sucked into the unit when the car is running cold. The air suction should decline and finally stop when the engine approaches warm up.

You can also diagnose the problem without taking the air filter off. Use a rubber hose as a stethoscope and listen for suction noise as the engine warms up. However if the injection pump air filter is plugged you may not hear suction.

Joe,

Looks like this is the warm up device for the later style FI pump. The 230SL has the long brass thermostat that is wax filled and very expensive to boot. Too bad though that the thermostats aren't interchangeable because the later one is so much cheaper.

Hello arifaat - -

After getting befuddled and frustrated one too many times fooling around with it,
I have solved my over rich condition by replacing the WRD with  a mechanical adjustment.
Here in sunny California our winters are very mild and so far this has worked well. All I had to do was find the leaned out  "sweet spot"  by trial and error. Turn the screw in to lean out the mixture - - then tighten the lock nut.  I would not recommend trying this unless you have tried every conventional solution first.   Regards, Larry in CA

Good One , Lurtch..

Now, get a lever on there with a choke cable and you can run it from the cabin....a manual WRD...   :)

Hello Lurch,
Yes this is definately a nice simple temporary fix for a faulty WRD.

George, yes I assumed lurch had the later configuration.
