Good morning all:
I have been corresponding with Gernold at SL Tech (thank goodness) regarding replacement of the engine mounts, commonly called motor mounts in U.S., in my 1964 230sl. As you may or may not recall, this car had an engine change at some point in its life. Gernold told me to check the engine support arms, and sure enough, they were from a sedan. I will purchase new arms and engine mounts shortly. My question: Since the arms must be replaced, does that alter the procedure for replacing the engine mounts? For instance, is it smarter to pull the support arms and mounts as a unit? Are there “gotchas” for removing the arms? Any wisdom and “support” is welcome.
As an aside, I was ready to sell the Pagoda as I have purchased another convertible to suit our needs (95 Jaguar XJ-S 4.0). The Mercedes just felt tired by comparison. However, after reading the lists’ warm welcome to the young lady that didn’t know if she made a wise purchase or not I have decided to hang in there awhile. With nine cars, two grandkids, 3 acres to maintain, school to attend, and a workweek of 55-60 hours on average the Pagoda seemed to be just one more thing that I wasn’t getting to anytime soon. On the other hand, how likely is it that I would find another rust-free Pagoda that has had all of the major repairs already done? In addition, how can I leave such a knowledge base such as this list? May my patience prevail.
