Voltage Regulator Replacement
« on: June 05, 2006, 11:59:52 »
Just a not of one more item to check.  For the past couple of years, my 230SL has had a "weak" battery that I put on a charger every so often.  I first credited it to infrequent driving.  Then after driving more, I credited it to a corroded battery wire and terminal.  This weekend, after driving an hour in the rain with my lights on, my battery was almost dead.  After driving home with the lights off, everything was fine.

I removed the alternator and had it tested by a local shop, he said that it was fine.  I then replaced the voltage regulator on the fender and everything appears fixed.

I popped the top off of the regulator to reveal the mechanical contacts were badly pitted.  The replacement Mercedes regulator has a solid state switching circuit that should last forever.

Moral:  If you have the original regulator in your car, think about replacing it with the newer solid state regulator.  Mechanical electrical contacts do not last forever.

Is the external appearance different than the original?

For originality's sake, is the original type of regulator still availble?

The new regulator has a slightly different appearance.  The corners on the aluminum top are rounded with "Bosch" stamped into the top.  My original has "Harting" printed on the top with corners are very square.  It should be relative easy to swap tops; the old top was just held on by tape, the new top has a rolled crease to secure it.  The mounting bracket and plug connections are the same.

Some opt to upgrade to the  sedan 55 Amp w/internal reg.  You can leave the old external reg in it's place for originality, it is just not wired in the circuit anymore .
This is a good upgrade for those who have added more circuitry demands with lighting mods /sound systems/alarms/etc........

.. Same goes for the higher torque starters.. much better performance
plus the added feature of ballast by-pass for ignition at starter position for better spark at crank RPMs...
