Engine mount additional pieces
« on: June 13, 2006, 11:25:49 »
All:

There were two pieces that Gernold sent me that I was unsure of and have been corresponding with him.  They are "bounce up" stops.  The problem is that I don't have the mounting hardward for these and cannot envision exactly how they mount and secure.  Does anyone have a picture or diagram, including hardware, of these pieces.  Gernold correctly said that it would be likely that mine were missing, as are most others.  Joe Alexander, do you have a "tour" of this stackup and installation process?

Thanks all,

Hello Ed,
Here is a diagram out in the BBB. The plate is used below the mount with a bolt holding it and a rubber bushing.  I have not done a tour on this subject yet but I do have a post here somewhere on changing these mounts. Good Luck.

The lower bolt is installed with the rubber bushing and the bump plate, then the entire assembly is installed in the car.

Thanks guys, that helped a lot.  There is much to learn on these cars, especially when following a previous owner who was less than exacting in his choices.

I appreciate the time to post and send the info.

I ran into a weird problem with the limit stops (bounce up stops) on a friend's 230SL.  The bump plate, lower bolt and rubber bushing were missing.  He purchased all new parts.  The problem was that the washer under the rubber bushing was too small and the bolt/rubber bushing combo could be pulled right through the hole in the bump plate.  That would defeat the purpose of the limit stop.  I checked with the dealer and the number on the bump plate was correct.  I ended up putting a larger washer under the rubber bushing.  Anyone else run into this?

Hello Vince,

There is a washer on the assembly originally or at least a "flange nut" (built in washer) according to the illustration. Maybe someone left it out previously on the car you were working on?

Hi Joe - My friend actually had new bolts with the flange washer attached (since the entire limit stop was missing).  The only thing I can think of is that the bump plates were wrong.  They had stickers attached with the correct part number, but I can't help thinking that the parts were mis-marked.  He bought them from an aftermarket supplier.

Attached is an image that Gernold sent me, with the correct bolt for the bump up stop.  Hope this helps someone else in the future who is missing parts.
