Will a W114 - 5 speed gearbox fit W113 SL?

Will a MB 250 W114 5 speed gearbox fit my 1964 W113 230 SL fitted an 280 SL engine? MB 250 W114 use the same engine block as the 250 SL as far as I know. If it's possible, is it a straight fit or does it need modifications to the vehicle and/or gearbox/bell house etc?

Hello Mille,

The gear boxes are quite different. The W114 five speed has three shift levers on the side of the transmission. The W113 car have a single shift lever on top of the tranmission. The configuration of the clutch slave cylinder is different and the output flange of the tranmission at the dirveshaft would need changed or modified. Most but not all the holes on the engine/tranmission connection are the same but the match plate could be changed also. The original clutch will bolt up and the will work with the unit.

If it fit in the W113 tunnel, I think the biggest challenge whould be room for the shifter and its  three rods! It would be an iteresting project.

I thought about this also, the 250C was a side shift. Then I sold the coupe with it's transmission in it... an incomplete w114 coupe would have not been worth much.

I did see of one w114 sedan on eBay that had a top-load 5speed, or so they said, but again my coupe was a side-load.
