Data Card Info
« on: March 08, 2008, 15:17:47 »
Hi all. I'm new to the group, and am starting to restore my 71 280 SL (728H). I did not get a data card with my car when I bought it used, and thought someone in the forum was able to pull all the pertinent info (orignal accessories, etc.) from a database somewhere. Can anyone help? Serial number is 11304412018633, Thanks much for any help.

Hi Bill. You can still get a copy of your car's data card. Call the Mercedes Benz Classic Center at 1-866-622-5277. They usually fax it to you same day or so. Then, we can decipher exactly what your car had on it when new. Good Luck! And welcome. Love to see some pics!

I went to their website and submitted a request. They emailed me a pdf of it. They were very fast, seems like just a few hours later (during the week).

Hi Bill welcome,

I'm fairly new to the group as well and I just recently contacted the classic center about my car's data card. Within 2 hours of my calling them they emailed me details translated from German and also an image of the actual card in my email. I learned my car although having a new paint job and interior is still it's original paint color and interior color (Ivory with congac interior) but the original soft top was black not the tan color it is now.

Good luck and just as a tip from a fellow new guy you can learn a lot by searching the site with the search function as well as asking questions, this is a great group.

Hey all, for what it's worth, I called the folks at MB Classic Center, and they told me they would not release any info on the car without me proving ownership first. So I'm sending a copy of the title. I guess it seems reasonable they won't respond with just a VIN.

I know when I asked for my data card last week they did not ask for the title but possibly the guy I spoke to was not following the rules.

I thought I had heard from someone that the classic center would ask for the title of the vehicle if you want the personalized certificate which I understand is something you need to purchase and is a profession looking document in a case. I've never seen one though.

I emailed the classic center through their website for their location in Southern California.  I sent the email Tuesday (few days ago) and today received an email response with a copy of the card and a translation.  They did not ask for ownership information at all.  What I am wondering now is whether I have "all" the information, perhaps I could post a copy of the card they sent me here so someone more familiar with them could let me know?

Kyle,

Check out the technical manual section on data cards it has a lot of good information and images of Data Cards that may answer your questions.

Today, I received the copy of the original window sticker for my 71 from MB USA in Montvale, NJ. Turn-around exactly 10 days. Good stuff.

Bill,

They sent you an actual window sticker or a data card? I was not aware Montvale would provide window stickers, what is the process to get one from them?

Mark,
Yep. Montvale supplied me a copy of the original window sticker. Quality was marginal, but it told me all I wanted. I sent the CAC a written request along with proof of ownership. Got the copy in 10 days.
