I would use a reputatble transporter like Intercity.  It's expensive to hire a good company ($1500) but the last thing you want its problems along the way.

I had  good luck with Concours Auto Transport a few years ago.  The owner is personally involved -- based in Seattle I believe.

As for insurance, I use Hagerty.  Be sure to get a "agreed value" policy.  Since I have never had a loss with them I cannot offer an opinion about how good they are.

I went with AAA Automotive Transport to ship my car from Tigard, OR to Atlanta, GA (door to door).  I had mine enclosed due to winter weather and the total cost was $1,450.  Everything went very smoothly and the drivers were professional and friendly.

For insurance I went with American Collectors Insurance Inc. in Cherry Hill, NJ.  They were recommended by USAA.  I went with maximum coverage on everything and it is still under $200 (will vary with stated value of automobile).  I have heard good reports about Hagerty as well.

I second Ken G. I had a 230SL shipped from San Francisco to Detroit for about $1400.00 by Intercity, no problems. Haggerty insures the car for about $450.00. They are as good as anyone for these cars.

I highly recomend Intercity.  There a bit pricey but wel worth the extra money compared to some of the other companies.  I would stay away from FedEx transport.  As for insurance I use hagerty.

I thought your new 250SL was in great shape and needed nothing?  Why not drive it home?  Is it far?

Don't forget to use the Search tool, key words like "insurance" or "transport" will provide lots of info.

Welcome to the group! I insure with Grundy Worldwide (they insure through Chubb). I pay $209.00/yr and can drive any day of the week as long as its not to/from work or for "errands". I did not need to provide an appraisal, just a page from the NADA website and a photo, plus proof that I have as many alternate cars registered as I do licensed drivers in the family.

No claims, however, and hope to keep it that way!

Rodd... it is in perfect condition, but it is almost 2000 miles, and althought the sun is shinning here today, it is winter and sure don't need any problems. Thought it best to ship and then plan a nice local 2 or 3 day road trip when I know what the weather is gonna do... agree?

Yes, that's a long way to go.  Ship it.  Do a Search (button in top right corner of this screen) for "shipping" or "transport".

My was car shipped from indiana to Bristol (UK) for under $800.  This was a super deal and one would be hard preseed to do it for less.  Clearing costs were on top.
Although the car was totally fine (roll on roll off) and the service was excellent (really excellent) its probably not ideal for a show car.
Moral of the story is that there are plenty of deals to be had, especially online, and unless i had a show car or was not on a budget, i would be hunting them down.

Remember you can always have your car insured for the journey itself.

Good Luck

Specialty had amazing service for me in a cross-country ship. Not the cheapest certainly, but they had the best reviews out there. Plus the owner of the Co. owns a 230SL and pointed me in the direction of the various forums when I was discussion the car to ship with him. They kept in excellent touch with their driver and picked up the car on time/schedule. (Specialty Mobile Carriers, 513.398.3701 4304 Cox-Smith Rd Mason, OH 45040)

I had some bad luck with the Giulietta spider going the bargain route in the past with other shippers.

I live in the LA area and am looking to insure my 1970 280 SL.I have looked at Grundy, Haggerty and American Collector and they all require garaged locked etc. and no driving to work at all. I have my car fully covered in a carport but its obviously not locked.  I also drive my car to work once or twice a week (only 15 miles roundtrip).  Do you have any suggestions for a more "regular" classic insurance?

Thanks,

Bobby

Kevin,

How on earth does Grundy know that you were running an errand when you cracked it up?  If you can't do errands and you can't drive to work, are you restricted to events only?  We have AC insurance for the Jag and the Pagoda for $150 each. That lets us drive each car 2000 miles a year (or more, for a very small surcharge) as long as we don't commute to work.

Of course, the test of any insurance is how your claim is handled.  Anyone had a claim? Which company? How did they respond?

Bobby:

As far as I know, all of the well known conventional insurance guys like State Farm , Nationwide, Allstate, etc. will cover your car if (I think they refer to them as classics) you keep the annual mileage in check (I think most limit you to 2,500/yr.) and provided you have a different car that you commonly use as your daily driver.

I use State Farm for all four of our cars and our house which, with this much 'product' in the package keeps the cost of my MB and Porsche right in line with quotes I have received from Hagerty and Grundy. Since I see no savings by going to a Classic Car insurer, I save a little extra on the daily drivers by having all four with one company; it's a helluva lot easier too.

Just my 2 cents worth.
