Mysterious Crunching and Clunking Sounds
« on: August 01, 2006, 07:36:11 »
Put about 400 miles on the car going back and forth to Dan Caron's Meeting of the clans this past weekend.  First good long runs in a while.

I've always seemed to have a noisy front end--clunks, crunches and other mysterious sounds.  These sounds only occured when coming off a stop position or when braking to stop when the car loses momentum--never when running.

Earlier this year, the mechnic discovered missing bolts on the lower control arm (2 of 4 were missing) and the other 2 were loose.  Replacing those quieted things down but not silent, and solved a brake pulling problem as well.

On the way home from Dan's some action in a rest stop parking lot made so much noise I brought it to the mechanic first thing yesterday morning.  Up on the lift, nothing obvious.

Started testing the torque on all nuts.  The main problem turned out to be the brackets that hold the sway bar to the frame--he was able to get 2 turns out of them until they were torqued down.  Funny though, is that they LOOKED tight with the head bottomed out on the split ring lock washer.  Looks can be deceiving.  Also: the upper control arm isn't taking grease.

Moral?

1)  Check the sway bar if you have funky noises.

2)  When greasing it isn't good enough to put the gun to the zerk, you need to ensure the grease is getting in!!

Car is quieter now then it has ever been!!

I had the same problem with the upper control arms of my 230SL not taking grease. Rather than go at it from underneath the car I jacked up one side. The two grease nipples are easily accessible. I then used a new grease gun and squeezed quite hard. The pump on the grease gun did move slowly and I was relieved to see grease slowly ooze out of the joints. I did the other side the same way.

While the wheels were of the ground I did try to shake the wheel to check for play. I found that the outer tie-rod end was worn on the passenger side. It is was an easy fix.

Surpisingly I had the inner tie-rod end done about 800 miles ago. All joints were tight at that time. I suggest these older cars need a bit more routine inspection to ensure integrity of the steering and suspension.

I have been fortunate in that there are no noises coming from my suspension.

You with the mind in the gutter!  Indeed she made all kinds of grunting and groaning sounds as I wheeled her around, stomped on her, and brought her to a stop.  When we got home I hosed her off, as she was quite hot and dirty.  Monday morning we got right back at it and I rode her hard all the way to the mechanics.  He put her on a lift, shook everything, and did his magic.  Now she's quiet.
