That's a good tip. Two weekends ago I changed the levers with removing the dash. --> it took me 4 hrs, a lot of patience and a good result. The price of new levers is at SLS: 116EUR (82pounds?).

Hello Tosh,

These "Durolevers" are almost as expensive as the originals. However they do save you about four or five hours of work since they are installed from outside the dash. You don't have much dis-assembly and not cables to mess with.  They are well made. They look a bit different on the outside than the originals.

To install these you need to carefully remove some of the disintegrated original levers. The "Durolevers" lock themselves in place after turning a tiny allen screw.  It may take you an hour or two anyway.

I usually opt for originals and after years of practice, can change these out in a couple of hours. If your lucky you can get early versions which were solid acrylic and never break like the later soft black units. the earlier units illuminate better also.

I'm with Joe on this.  I bought the Duralevers and did not like the way they looked and opted for the real deal from SLS.  The illumination of the plastic levers is, in my opinion, one of the real distinguishing features of the dash and well worth the extra couple of hours to take the dash apart to replace.  Make sure to get new bulbs before you start the job.  If you go slow it is still "only" a 4 hour job and on your first night drive you will bask "in the glow of the dashboard lights..."

One  of the better modifications my father made to his 280SL is to cast the levers in alliuminum color coated. life time no break.
