SS exhaust system

My system from Timevalve arrived today.  Will be installing it over the next few days.  Here is a picture of the entire system.  If anyone wants some detailed pics let me know today or tomorrow and I'll take them.

I also purchased their accessory kit.  The kit contained 4ea. SS U-bolt muffler clamps. They would stick out like sore thumbs. I'm going to replace these clamps with a flat band type SS T-bolt clamp.  Should be able to hide the adjusting bolt on top so that the clamp will not be noticable.

Actually I installed my stainless system with the U-bolt clamps and you really can't see them (unless you really, really try!), but good luck on the installation and we're curious to hear what you think of the sound.

I have a Borla SS exhaust on my 280SL and standard chrome exhaust tip. I do not notice any lower sound just the same exhaust note all pagodas make.

I think the exhaust on the deck rail is a pretty nice piece of art, you should keep it there and buy another system for the car!  Looking forward to further pics and write-ups.

Thanks for the humor guys.  The installation went fairly well.  Waiting on the band type clamps which should arrive today.  The clamps on my system are needed to set the exhaust tips level.  There is some twist possible at the front and rear connection points.  Final adjustments will be made today.  There is maybe 3 to 4 inches of pipe overlap at each connection.  Makes for a very tight fit without the clamps.  Took it for a drive last night and I have a slight rattle which I hope to cure with the clamps.  I like the sound very much.  At idle there is a nice low rumble.  From 1500 to 2500 rpms there is a very sweet acceleration tone.  After that the sound sort or disappears.  One day when I have nothing better to do I'll try to record a sound track and post the file.  I could see straight through the old oem rear muffler/resonator?. No chambers or deflectors visable. Don't know if this is by design or not.  The old system sounded loud in the same rpm range as above and the sound was kind of crude.

I am thinking of replacing my exhaust system and have read all the various threads.  I talked to my mechanic today and he recommended the non-SS option for 2 main reasons:

1) The louder and different sound
2) He said that the SS is likely to backfire esp going down a hill

Any comments on the above?  What are my options if I go non-SS?

I've owned both and I can't say the stainless was more prone to backfire. It was certainly louder though and sounded slightly different, though still a pleasant, sporty exhaust note. Looks nice too.

If you decide not to go s/s, the exhaust of choice is true OEM made by "Eberspacher." I would avoid the classic aftermarket "Bosal" exhaust as it is a thinner gauge and not as durable.

I've noticed no backfire at all with my system. If I get around to it I'll record the exhaust sound and make it available for those that want it.

If one is ordering the original exhaust through a M-B dealer, will they be getting the preferred Eberspacher unit or does the Classic Center source the Bosal parts?

My car backfired a lot more when it still had a non-stainless exhaust system in place; I think this is mostly related to ignition settings rather than what kind of exhaust system is used, although maybe a leaking exhaust manifold could produce backfiring?

Bosal incidentally is a Dutch company, as is Koni (from the shock absorbers) - not that that's important!
