injection pump timing
« on: September 23, 2006, 07:17:55 »
so, I was talking with hans at H and R about the issue of my 230 sl motor running rich.  we talked about all the items that could impact the fuel mixture. In my instance we discussed

1. csv - on my car plugged - hans is going to repair
2. inj pump thermostat - not working hans is going to repair
3. mixture on the inj pump - probably will be lean now since hans will repair items 1 and 2 above

then hans said it is possible for the inj pump to be mis timed.

What are the chances of an MB dealer mis timing an injection pump upon installation?   should I pull my pump to check the timing?

Matt--This topic has been covered in several earlier posts. Essentially, the answer to your question is yes if the mecahnic does not correctly line up the timimg marks on the FI Pump or the engine is not set to the correct crankshaft position while re-installing. This will all make more sense if you look over the various posts on this topic.

Matt,

It is easy to install your IP incorrectly, the timing is very different for your version than for newer pumps.  I would say it is worth a look if all else is sorted out first.  On your pump, engine should be at 20 ATDC for firing sequence on #1 cylinder, then turn the pump until the timing marks on the collar and spline line up exactly, then fit it back together.  As I recall it is 20 degrees different from the newer pumps.

Best,

Hello Matt,

I just unscrambled a dealer installed new engine on a 230SL. The injection pump was installed 180 degrees out of time!

The engine ran fairly well except at idle and the power was a bit down.

I do have a method by which you can check without taking the injection pump off. You would need to unscrew some injection lines and remove one fitting and check valve in the pump to do the check.

Unhook the three rear injection lines. Remove the injection pump #4 19mm fitting (third from rear). Remove the check valve in the injection pump. You can now feel the position of the #4 plunger (piston) in the pump using a nail or such. When the engine is at 12 degrees ATDC (after top dead center of #1 cylinder)on the compression stroke (#1 cam lobes upward ), the plunger in the pump should be near the top of it's stroke. You can feel it travel upwared and downward as you turn the engine by hand. When it reaches the top of its stroke check the crankshaft timing.  During re-assembly be sure not to overtighten the 19mm fitting. 18 ft. lbs is the specified torque.

george,all
thanks for the replies,  I actually did a search on the inj timing, all are very thorough on the process of installing etc.

my question was more targeted on the possibility of the mechanic mis installing the inj pump,  from the replies it seems there is a good chance the mechanic did mis install the pump.
