need tips for removing injection pump
« on: October 04, 2006, 17:53:51 »
so, I need some tips on removing the injection pump on my 230 sl.
I have all but 2 nuts securing the injection pump to remove.

I need a tip on how to get to the lower nut that secures the pump to the motor.   This is the one about 6 o clock.  the other one at 9 o clock is the other nut left to remove.

is access to the 6  o clock nut only accessable from below?  I cannot get a wrench on the nut when reaching in from the drivers side fender.

thanks
matt

I found that the only way to get to it was from below

Hello Mat,

I use a  13mm  swivel socket and a 10" (approx) extension  (all 1/4" drive) and remove it from above.

I am pretty sure on my 280 SL I can remove all nuts from above, using standard Craftsman wrenches (don't own swivel tools).

Out of curiosity, how many hours of labor including r&r are involved in?  What cost is involved to have an injection pump rebuilt?

It took me a couple of hours to remove my pump. The net you are strugling with was actualy missing. I paid around $600 for Jerry Fairchild to rebuild my pump. It took me three hours to put it back in. The car started readily after the rebuild. It did need to be adjusted as it was a little lean. For the adjustment it took the skillfull touch of Al Leifring

Nate, I advise caution before a rebuild. My car was abused by the PO...if yours was not abused it may not need rebuilding. Chck your gas filter to asure you do not have rust, check your fuel pump and your injectos before considering a rebuild

I never could get that nut off completely from the bottom or top.  As I recall something was in the way that was even harder to get to. Maybe the oil cooler.  Anyway after trying for days I gave up bolted it back up, concentrated on everything else that could have been the reason for rough running and added a pint of 2 cycle motor oil with the first tank of gas.  Rough running continued for awhile, but it eventually smoothed out and currently runs great with idle rpm at 700.  That was in 1999.

Mike C,
funny thing, the bolts that secure the inj pump to the motor were 13 mm.  I ended up using a 14mm on the lower bolt as the 13 would not line up.  I will try a swivel attachment between the socket and ratchet when re installing the pump.

that lower bolt is a pain to get to, as one has to reach above the fuel filter to get to that lower bolt.
