Really heavy fuel leak - petrol spraying out
« on: April 24, 2009, 18:08:42 »
 :(
Hi guys,
My 1967 250 SL has just developed the worlds worst fuel leak. When I rev the engine fuel sprays out from underneath like a power shower!!

I had a look underneath before I had to walk away due to fumes, and it seemed to be coming from the rear left hand side, approx 35 cm in from the rear wheel.

Do you think it sounds like a shot fuel pump, or might I be lucky and it's just a fuel pipe?

Any UK members recommend a good place to go for a repair (I live in Berkshire). Thanks.

It's most likely a rotten fuel hose that has finally cracked/crumbled. The fuel pump usually doesn't crack open like that.

The fuel feed pump is mounted right next to the left rear wheel, and there are a number of hoses involved. The first hose goes from the fuel tank supply outlet to the fuel pump inlet. A second hose goes from the fuel pump outlet to the metal line that runs along the length of the car, ending up in the engine bay. A third hose goes from the metal return line to the fuel tank inlet.

Based on your description, it is the second hose that is most likely spraying fuel like that. I would switch off the car in a well-ventilated area, let everything cool and the spilled fuel evaporate before working on it. You can replace the offending hose without raising the car, but it may be a tight squeeze. I would replace all three hoses on that area.

Let us know how it goes, and please be careful! Keep a helper around with a good fire extinguisher.

Waqas' suggestion is a good place to start. As he says there are 2 fuel hoses that lead from the tank. One to take fuel to the pump and one that brings the return from the engine back to the tank.

I replaced both of my hoses last summer as they were ancient and crumbling. It's a pretty easy job to do, but can get messy as you will need to remove the ends of the hose from the fuel tank which will result in split fuel. (On the advice of another on the site) I plugged the hoses with golf tees and that works really well. The only problem I had was that I cut to cut off the clips (use a junior hacksaw with grease on the blade gingerly, not a dremel) that secured the pipes because the old clips (like the pipes they held) were just thoroughly corroded and shot. So, whilst the job is a bit messy, it's very straight forward although I was working in a pit under the car, which made it easier. If you don't want to run the risk of fuel running down your arm, and back, then get someone else to do it. Any garage will be able to do the job for you; it doesn't need an expensive classic car place at all. Assuming that's the problem. But it will be pretty easy to verify. Getting to the garage might be a problem, of course.

And as well as a fire extinguisher for fuel fires, you will also need some spill sorb to soak up the fuel (or saw dust will do). Let us know how you get on.

Thanks James and Waqas - really appreciate your info.

It sounds straight forward, but as I don't have a pit, and I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to things like petrol, I think I'll get it into a garage.
