My new car: 2006 Ford GT Supercar

As some of you might remember; I have a '68 Dark Green/ Cognac 250 SL.

Well, I finally pulled the trigger last Nov. and am having it totally restored by Kent Bain of Automotive Restortations. I was just up this Fri to see the bare metal body being prepped.  Also, saw the GAHH seat kit upulstered onto the seat frame (medium tan - closest to the original cognac; w/o getting imitation cognac).  Quid, the trim expert was working on a Silver Gullwing.

In the mean time I decided I was going to reward my self with my first new car ever. Its mind blowing; I got it after July 4th.

Yes, thats it. :oops:

I heard they have done 20+ SL's and even came in on budget or under budget by ~$50.  Doug recommended them; and I got 5 personal referrals from past clients.

I think it pays to have a local SL specialist shop do it; eg, it really helped to personally pick the leather.

Swatches/samples dont cut it (i got no less than 6 suppliers; and colors/grain were not great); and was told real dope on seat door panel/kit issues (certain seat kits smell terrible once on!)

Don't recall you weighing in on "Would you lend your ride" but, hey, have I got a deal for you...why wait on your restoration, I can lend you my sl for a month or so and I'll watch the GT for ya, just let me know when to expect the swap...

Congratulations on your two beautiful cars. I am sure you will enjoy the SL once ready.

Just curious - why did you never buy a new car before and what made you decide to 'break that habit' for the GT?

I hear the GT just guzzzzzzles gas.....having said that it has to be in the top ten of every petrol heads wish list....congrats....if you don't spoil yourself nobody will.

We prefer old school.  Deuce, the GT40, comes home today from the CH MOT--I will be able to hear him about a quarter mile away...

I am 38, and have been a hard core car nut all my life.  I basically never liked any of the new cars!  I liked classic cars from the 50-60s and thought for the price of a new toyota you can get a used 911 or a 250 SL. So that never made sense.

However, I did realize that if you buy a flagship sports car that is 7-10yrs old its 50-85% of its original value.  So all those 80s sports cars: Porsche 928, BMW 6 series, etc. were great buys. I did buy a '85 BMW 635 CSI Blk/Blk 5spd in '94 for $8K; so i would have a modern sports car with a/c, etc. (still have it)

Anyway, after 20yrs of not buying new cars you end up saving a bit. So that brings us to the summer of 2006. I said you are a car guy, and you have never treated yourself to a new car! So in 3 weeks, I was in a new car.  I did look at everything in this price range: Porshce 911 Turbo, Ferrari F430, Lamborghini, and numerous mass market sports cars (Vette Z06, Viper, SL500, BMW 6r, etc).  The Ford GT was head and shoulders above all.  First in the way it looks (its about the size of a Lincoln town car and wider); second in the performance: at 218 mph top speed its basically the fasted production car out there (road and track did a shootout); even faster than the Ferrari Enzo.  Price was also the most reasonable in the supercar segment; durability, maintenance, and service was also better (esp. v. Lamborghini, Ferrari quality control issues).

I would recommend to all that are on the fence, to follow you car passions.  Life is too short.

Good for you. Hope it is a 2007 the last year for the Ford GT. My good friend Brain Winer a total ford Enthusiast and co author for a new book comming out on the new ford GT and GT 40 has both a Safier GT 40 a real continued version from the same engineers in England and the new Ford GT he got to order off ebay at $100.00 over cost. I was at his house when the garage got pulled up and said did you decide to paint your GT 40 grey he said no this is the new Ford GT.
Brain is co author of a new book which will be comming out with good history and photgraphs on the new Ford GT and the orginal GT-40.
Brain got me intrested in musule cars in 1982 when he took me for a ride in his new 1982 GT Mustang and decided to flout the rear axle on the on ramp and power shift through the gears. From then on I was a ford person. He has a way with driving cars any car that lets you know how good his cars are. He sold two Trans AMs toget this car. I have yet to get a ride but I am sure it will be a total E ticket.
