so, while the motor and tranny are out
« on: November 22, 2006, 18:38:01 »
so, after coming to the realization that my motor is well worn I am going to pull the motor, tranny and inj pump and send all off for rebuild.

while all are out I plan to detail the engine compartment, replace the firewall pad, sub frame mounts, motor mounts, tranny mount.

is there anything else I should do while I have easy access the the subframe?  the front end feels fairly tight.
back in 85  the following were replaced
kin pin assy, link pin kit, left and right tie rod assy, drag link assy , I just installed new ft shocks.  I doubt the car had many miles put on it since.

would it be worth to pull the while subframe and take it to my indi to inspect ?    I figure the biggest problem is dealing with the leaf springs.  are there any concerns messing with them?

Thanks
matt

Hello Matt,

Read the posts on hood removal for some tips. I like to remove the head first. The block assembly is easy after that.  Who do you have in mind for the engine work?  Good Luck,

Sounds like the front end should be OK. Make sure all the grease fittings take grease!

Keep us up to date.

Joe,
I will do a search on removing the hood, I need to come up with a hook to secure the hood spring while the hood is off.

The motor is going to metric motors.  they were recommended by several folks in the forum and by gernold at sl tech.

tranny will go to sun valley hydraulics
inj pump will go to hans at h&R

I will also send hans the injectors,  wonder if  should just buy 6 new ones.  Arizona autohaus has them for about 90 bucks each.  do gas injectors need to be calibrated similar to the diesel injectors??

hans said the the injectors were either good or bad, no real repair possible.

Matt,

If all is well with the front end I would think twice about removing the leaf springs.  The attachment is also a critical part of the geometry, it is really tough to get it all back properly without expert and experienced help.  As for the hook for the hood spring, I use an "S" hook I picked up from Home Depot.  It has a plastic coating, works great, won't scratch anything.  And yes, you are correct, the injectors are either good or bad, although some argue that they can be cleaned if for some reason they are fouled with old/gummy fuel.

Let us know how the rebuild turns out, sounds like fun.

Best,
g
