Fan Shroud 68 280 SL

Hello everyone.  Just bought a 68 for my wife.  She always wanted one...and now she has it.  Should this car have a fan shroud???  Did one come from the factory??  Thanks very much, rb6667

Hello rb and welcome!

A lot of these cars came from the factory with no fan shrouds!  It seems most of the USA cars with AC had a fan shroud.  I also know of USA cars without AC, that came from the factory with fan shrouds!?

That might depend on whether your car is actually a '68 or a '67 that was registered as a '68 in the US. I have a '67 and it doesn't have a fan shroud. Mine was originally a euro car but I don't believe the 250's had a fan shroud. Others can confirm this, but I imagine you can make one fit. They probably help with cooling in stop and go driving and certainly offer some protection when working under the hood with the engine running.

When you order air conditioning you got a fan shroud to help cool the engine. This should of appeared in 1968 on, contact the classic center for the part.

Thankyou to all that responded.  I am a car guy.  Several Hi-po American cars...but this is my first attempt at working on a German car.  This car does have factory AC. I thought it strange that there was no fan shroud.  Looking at the service history of the car, there were many complaints about running hot.  One mechanic by passed the heater core saying that would help.

I called the MB Classic Center in California.  They do not have a fan shroud.  They also looked in their database, to include the MB Classic Center in Germany, and no such luck.  It is no longer available nor is any made.  They said the best bet is to look for a used one at a junk yard.  Unfortunately I too need one to help with the cooling.  About two months ago, my mechanic made an order to Germany for one and he was he still has not received any.  Good luck in finding one?

Does not seem to be a difficult part to reproduce? I will have to check to see whether I even have one on my car.

'bypassed the heater core' to aid in cooling?????  Doesn't the heater 'cool' the water/glycol in winter - and summer?

By passing the heater core, is said by some, to help with cooling.  I know that running the heater blower will help a small amount if an engine overheats, and the coolant is being routed through the heater core.

This mechanic claimed by passing the heater core completely would help.  Who knows???

My wife will not be happy with this I can assure you.....however, since it suspose to be 70 degrees here tomorrow, may not be a problem.
