Oil sump scavenge

I'm new to Pagodas and checked the archives on this to no avail, and the haynes manual does not have a picture I can reference. On every old german car I've owned (and there have been many;-) the screen on the sump pump has faced outward into the sump (ie protruding or convex). When I pulled the pan on my 230SL, it was facing into the pump housing and not visible until you pull the retaining clip and pull it out(ie: concave). Is this correct or did the PO make a mistake?

Your oil pump screen is correct. the screen is inward on all these engines.

There's 3 different oil pumps used on these engines.
1) basic pump with screen used on 230SL
2) similar to first version but has an oil pressure relief valve on the bottom of the pump
3)similar to second version pump but this one has a rubber cone over the inlet to the screen. This pump can be used ONLY with the ribbed oil pan that's 7mm deeper than earlier oil pans.

Thanks, I guess it does allow the pan to be a little more shallow...
