dusty emission
« on: February 11, 2007, 09:52:57 »
when I put my foot down there is a dusty sort of brown / grey , not really smoke but , well like dust comes out of my exhaust. Any ideas what it is? It used to happen on my other merc too and that was an auto. The car runs well and this happens under all ciircumstances, in traffic and on the motorway.

Hello Nick,

could be a slightly rich mixture or just soot in the exhaust system. It may just need a good exercise to clean it out. What are your driving habits?

Hi Joe,

I wondered if my car was running a bit rich, my driving patterns are that I am both in traffic and on the motorway and the car gets a 90mph drive at least once a week. I can sometimes be on the motorway for hours and if I put my foot down out comes the grey brown stuff. The same in town. I do about 10000 miles a year equally on motorways at speed and flying around town. I guess rich it is.

thanks a lot mate

Hello Nick,

Sounds like your car is getting good exercise. If everything else is in good tune and the linkages are correct, you may want to try removing one shim from under the warm running device on the injection pump. This will lean all speed ranges of the fuel injection.

Nick,

Hi.  Joe's advice applies to a Pagoda.  According to your signature, you have a red 350SL (W107 chassis).  Is that right?

Hello,

Yes Rodd is correct. My advice is for a W113 SL. The W107 SLs also was a 280SL with different 6cyl engine. and also the V 8s as 350SLs, 450SLs, 380SLs, 500SLs, and 560SLs.
