Looking for mechanic in Vancouver
« on: April 04, 2007, 11:57:59 »
My trusted mechanic retired after years of semi retirement.  Can anyone recommend a knowledgeable mechanic who also respects restored cars and is careful around them?  I want someone in the Vancouver Canada area and I am will to travel up to 50 miles for the right person.

Currently, my car stumbles off the line until it reaches 1200 rpm or so.  This symptom is present after the warm up cycle and the severity of it is somewhat random.  From my observation it is temperature related.  I have replaced the thermostat in the injection pump to no avail.  Thus far, I have tried 2 local mechanics and neither have resolved the problem.  Meanwhile, I have spent lots of money replacing other parts such as fuel pump, injectors, and even relined the tank.  I have been chasing a solution now for over 18 months, a problem that started after the replacement of head gasket and top end rebuild.  This has been most frustrating.

Hi Sam,

I used to go to Carnarvon Motors, but I guess it had been over 2 years since I've had to do anything with my SL, and they too have closed up shop.

Recently, I took my '87 560SEC to Milo European (781 Kingsway), and was impressed by the knowledge and familiarity with not just my '87, but with the older cars as well. He took quite a keen interest in my SL, even though I didn't have it at the shop. He had a 190SL in the shop for some work as well. Shop rate is $89/hr I think. Let me know if you have any questions.

FYI, I had similar problems with my SL, but managed to work it out with the same things you have tried. I can't recall the final solution - but since I had my tank re-coated, I've been trouble-free.

Good luck.

Rich

PS - there's a bunch of the W126 owners in Vancouver meeting at Spanish Banks on May 12th 11:30am; Western-most parking lot... I was planning on bringing both the W126 and W113 down if you are interested.

Rich, thanks for your reply and tips.  I have found someone recently who has proven to be very knowledgable.  He managed to make a 100 percent improvement to the car in less than 2 hours' time.  I will see about the Spanish Banks meet in May as I live close by.  Carnavon Motors is now closed and they were very good.  The 2 sons are still very young and hopefully will re surface somewhere else.  That's my hope anyway.  Sam
