early tire jack & tools
« on: April 20, 2007, 13:16:29 »
My '63 230sl has the vertical spare tire placement & the jack has the seperate rachet handle. I know how the jack is mounted in the trunk. Can someone send a pic or instructions for the placement of the seperate jack rachet handle & the "L" shaped lug bolt wrench. There are two spring clips in the trunk that I believe are for the lug bolt wrench, but can't figure out where the jack rachet handle goes.  My glove box owners manual shows the later style jack with the non-removeable handle. I appreciate any help on this.

Regards, Paul, Early '63 230SL

Hi Paul. Yes I can -- later when I am home. No guarantees mine are positioned correctly but at least its something. I know the lug bolt wrench goes in the clips just forward of the left tail-light.

The pressed steel early ratchet handle is inserted into the tube of the jack itself (1)(with the coarse spiral thread on its outside). This illustration shows the late 230SL, here two of the clips are for the L-shaped wrench(2), one is for the short pin(3), threaded M12x1,5 in one end, which is used to assist wheel mounting. (4) is the triangular wheel chock.

As promised, here is how my jack is attached these days. Not sure if it's exactly as it was new.

James and Paul,

For what it is worth the pic James posted shows exactly the same configuration for stowing the jack and lug wrench as in my '64. The only difference is that the jack you have, James, appears to be a later one (mine has the handle that is removed and then stowed in the hollow center of the jack screw).

Best,
g

Darn. Have to move that over to the "unoriginal" side of the ledger. My original must have vanished along with my tool kit!

Thanks everyone, I now have them placed correctly.
