Ron,
That is a difficult thing to find.
You will need a rag, wire brush, flashlight/droplight.
Lift up the rear of the car, place a chock at opp front wheel, parking brake on, jackstand to hold up car.
Crawl under in the, shine light at the differential, use wire brush to brush off the bottom of the diff  to remove the gunk/dirt/ mud/ crud and wipe clean with rag.  look at the surface with flashlight and find the #'s.
There should be some faint numbers stamped.  Your car I think has the 4:08 rear end.

Check out the thread "Replacing my 230sl differential":
http://sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=1642,ratio

In his post (on page 3), Rodd Masteller says "On the lower part of the rear of the differential there should be a small (2 inches) half-circle that is flat and has the ratio stamped into it. It will say 3/75 or 4/08 or something like that."

Yes, that's where it is on my 230SL, but I believe on the 280SL it's on the left side.
