waterpump replacement & lubrication
« on: May 21, 2007, 18:35:02 »
Hello fellow forum members.

I am in the process of replacing the waterpump on my 1965 230SL and see that there are 2 holes in the new waterpump housing. My thought is to tap and tread one of the holes and install a grease fitting for lubrication. The old pump is a replacment pump and does not have a fitting nor any threads for one to be installed. Looks like it was never serviced.

Am I on the right track doing this??

My shop manual says the pump requires lubrication every 12000 miles but does not specify the type grease/oil to be used. My thinking is to use a grease fitting and use the same type of grease used for servicing the front end. Or should I carefully insert motor oil or marvel mystery oil into the top insertion hole.

Your feedback and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Mine is a 65 car and the correct oil for the water pump is hypoid gear oil as in the back axle it has a level plug in the side and a filler plug in the top, both are hexagon bolts.Good luck, Mike

Hello Peter,
If your new water pump does not have these two plugs then it will have sealed bearings and does not need lubrication:

Naj.
Thanks for your reply. I think you solved my question. Mine is a later style unit. Pictures will not upload.

My thought is now that one of the 2 holes is weep hole to allow fluid to drip if the pump fails. The other hole is for???

Thanks in advance.

Weeping when it's upside down?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
