Foolishly, I posted the following in the "for sale" group yesterday: the perils of being the 'newbie'!

"What a welcome discovery this group is! I am restoring a 65 230 SL, and when it is finished I would love to re-register with a 'vanity plate' ['cherished number'?] with particular resonance - for example, the plate number of the first 230 registered in Germany, or an historically significant car. Does anyone have any idea where I might start or, indeed, what that elusive first number might be? Thanks in anticipation!"

OK, so the suggestion in the right topic area too:

The most historically significant Pagoda is the famous Böhringer's 230 SL winner of the '63 Spa-Sofia-Liège rally (the car which appears in our Group's logo)... and its plate number is:

Next step is to paint it all signal red, with big "39" numbers on the doors, fix yellow rally plates on the hoods, 3 additional headlights, racing seats...  ;)

Note: You will find the list of all changes of the racing 230 SL in next Pagoda World issue (number 2). If you are Full Member, you will receive it soon.

Another options for the "vanity plate":

MB 230 SL
230 SL
65-230 SL
W113 SL
MB PAGODA
PAGODA SL

Thank you Gerhard. I realised that I posted this thread in the wrong forum [items for sale], so I moved it to the 'General Discussion' group where I will also post this observation.

I followed one of your posts on SL day (looks like a great day - good photos) and from there picked up a photo posted by Komeet 16, a photo of a car which looks very much like the Bohringer [sorry - can't manage the umlaut!] car with registration 'S-0637'. Perhaps you or Albert might know if this is the original car re-registered, or a 'copy' car?

Cheers,
kns.

Hi kns,

In fact we could consider the "S-0637" it's an "original copy" car  :)

The original Böhringer's racing car (chassis 113042-10-000014, number plate "S-RV 441") is missing. The car present in the SL day with registration "S-0637", is the official replica made by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center (Fellbach/Stuttgart).
It has the same modifications that the original car, and Böhringer himself assisted during the replica manufacture in order to make it as close as possible in all details to the real car. MB also used an early 230 SL to make the replica. Now, MB takes it to classic car events, and usually with Eugen Böhringer at the controls.

So, if you can choose, it's better the original "S-RV 441"!

Hi all. There is a wonderful article and pix of this car, including front-page pic in Mercedes magazine.  I think it was the Nov or Dec issue, but it may have been a little earlier.  We have so many classic/old car mags lying around that I can't get to them all in a timely manner.  This issue is what got me looking for my Little Red Truck in Sarasota, and by the end of the week I was the proud owner of a signal red 1968 280...  I call her the Truck because the first thing I did with her was to haul home 36 bags of mulch for the garden, 6 at a time.  No harm done, and she did it proudly!

Cheers,

Hi Trice,

Agree: Nice article! It was the second issue of Mercedes-Benz Classic magazine. See comments and the picture of the cover in a previous message from March:  http://index.php?topic=133
