Hardtop Headlining
« on: June 02, 2007, 09:36:22 »
I decided it was time I did something about the stained headlining in my hardtop last week. I purchased a can of cream trim spray and after a bit of masking up my headlining was transformed.

This simple fix is highly recommended as it has transformed the look of my hardtop from badly stained mess to as new. Had a bit of trouble getting rid of the aerosol smell but a few days with an electric air freshener seemed to work OK.

Unfortunately I didn’t take a before photo but enclose an after picture.

What is the brand name of the cleaner that you used? I need to do the same to my wife's car.

Thanks, Pete

Hi Pete,

I de-greased the surface with something called Vinylkleen that I was given then gave the whole thing a few coats of Bradleys liquid plastic. I had tried all sorts of cleaners and solvents to try and remove the staining but to no avail. All as new now though.

David, That headliner looks great.  I want very much to paint/dye my headliner as removing the trim and windows and all to reinstall a new headliner just seems so unappealling to me and my clumsy ten thumbs.

What brand and color or code of the cream trim spray for the vinyl headliner did you use??  You results look so good it would be nice to try to repeat those results.
Also, how stained was the hardtop before? There are some real spots on mine at the front especially.

Also, is there anything recommended to spray on prior to or after the color spray to somehow seal or stabilize the stray dust/insulation material within from falling out like fine snow when the headliner is pressed upon?

Hi Chad,

Unfortunately I purchased the trim paint some time ago and there is not much on the tin to identify it other than the notation Cream. I will have a look through my papers later and see if I can throw some more light on it for you.

I don’t have any information on the original MB headlining colour but think that an exact match might be quite difficult. Mine was very badly stained yellow round the edges but was not bad in the centre. That said, I think it was more a case of even discolouration in the middle. I tried quite a lot of general purpose cleaners and solvents over a long period but nothing would remove any of the marks. I considered replacing the headlining but not for very long after I found how difficult it was.

When I bought the paint I decided that any even off white colour would be an improvement and in the end I masked and sprayed the whole thing in about 2 hours. The tin was enough for about three coats with a bit extra on the edges and I still cannot believe how good it now looks. The final colour is not quite as bright as the photo makes out but it is certainly lighter than it was, looks 100% better and will do for me. In the end a very easy job with miraculous results. In fact, the hardest part was getting rid of the paint smell afterwards

It looks great.  I will try this someday, glad to see it can work so well.  I was hoping spraying the headliner night work well.  The other thing I will probably do is remove the hardtop wood bow and refinish it, because mine is shabby compared to the other wood now.
