fathers day drive...
« on: June 18, 2007, 05:39:56 »
The weather was beautiful here in northern michigan sunday, so i took my wife for a lovely top down (the car's, not my wife's) drive into the country. Great day for it. Got some sprinkles by the time we made it back home, but all in all a great fathers day gift.

How about the rest of you?

My daughter woke me up with a large box of chocolates & a big kiss  before running of to her tennis lesson [ Meanwhile I washed & polished my 280 before we had our London sprinkles ]
Later my wife & daughter took me to our superb local Italian Restaurant .

Lovely fathers day .

PS; Peter , where do the kids come in ? [ Fathers Day ]

Well, mine was a nice solo drive (early AM -- quick 35 minute spin up the 20 out of Nevada City and back.) What made it special was pulling back up to my beautiful waving, smiling daughters -- ready to "do presents". They really treat the car like its one of the family -- and sharing smiles is what its all about.

Oh... the kids. Two big lumbering 18 year old boys. They got me a card! And they went out with their mother to help her get me a gift. I asked for a tool box. I got patio furniture. I am sure the boys had a good laugh over that one.

It was a good day all around.

Michigan was a perfect place to take a drive.   My wife and I took a easy drive along the lake shore with the top down.   Then through downtowon Grand Haven.  Got quite a few looks. :-)

dendrinos,  Where in Michigan are you.   I know the northern part fairly well.  My family and I have a vacation cabin near Torch Lake and I have a brother in Traverse City.

Traverse City, born and raised. Lived for a while in Holland. Grand Haven is a great place to bop around.

Sunday, I attended a car show at Sully Plantation, organized by the Potomac Region of the Model "A" Ford Club of America.  They have about 18 or 19 classes for Fords of every variety, maybe 10 or 11 classes for other American iron, and two classes for foriegn cars: everything up to 1966 and everything 1967 and later.  Most of the cars present were totally restored down to the last nut and bolt.

There were four Pagodas between the two foriegn classes, my 230SL, Ray Schlicht's 250SL and two 280SLs owned by Michael Egan and Ken Gear.  At one point in the afternoon every possible configuration of Pagoda was represented.  My Pagoda represented a convertible with hardtop fitted, the 250SL was a california coupe, one 280SL had the top up and the other down.  Amazingly the most commmon and the most rare transmissions were represented, as there were two automatics and the the 250SL and one of the 280SLs were 5-speeds!

The 250SL California Coupe, which had just moved out of the garage under its own power the day before for the first time after a four-year home restoration effort, was awarded 2nd place in the late class and your 'umble scribe placed 3rd in the early class.  Ray was working on his car right up to the morning of the event, installing the hood after dinner the night before and fitting the grille early in the morning prior to driving to the event. He didn't have time to trim out the trunk other than to throw in the spare and a tool box, just in case, so a couple of us donated an original trunk mat and spare tire cover from our own cars so that it would look complete for the judges.

After the show I ran up to Columbia, MD to join my wife and her extended family for a big father's day celebration, a two hour round trip on a languid summer-like afternoon and evening.  Altogether, not a bad Father's Day outing for we who are owned by Pagodas!

Mike,  Sounds like you had a good day.  Speaking of Fords (model A's)  I'm in the middle of restoring (fixing) my dad's 1931 Model A coupe (with rumble seat).  Should have if done late this year if all goes as planned.

I too took a long drive on Father's day--I lost my dad four years ago and actually bought my car with the small gift the insurance companies gave us--(asbestos cancer).  I felt alot better after taking her out for a ride.  My dad would love to see me playing the "what's that sound????" game I play whenever I drive her! My dad restored old tractors so I know he would approve.

We are going to Upper Michigan in two weeks.  I am originally from Marquette which is in the Upper Penninsula.  I got to ask "you's guys"...if you think that Traverse City is in "northen Michigan" what do you all consider the U.P.???  I am flying with my three boys (10, 13 and 14) to see my mom and family.  We can't wait to smell fresh air (rather than the southern California smog)..we plan on fishing alot!!...hopefully will make it to Mackinaw Island to get some fudge and enjoy the beauty of the land.  I envy you!  Someday maybe I'll have to pack up my little car and come back to live there again (oops! just had a vision of FREEZING!...cancel that idea!).  Thanks for the post!

Alright, so technically we are Northern Lower Michigan. I have spent quite a bit of time in MArquette over the years. My wife went to college there for a few years.

That would be a nice drive. Going up there in the 280. But you would NOT want to have troubles with the car up there.
